I thought I would bring back an article that I wrote in the begining of summer about rain. I can recycle blog posts right? We are after all in Madison, and very into our recycling and being green, so I figure I can.
The blog I wrote was 13 Ways To Stop The Rain and Water. I’m going to add one more to that. Shut the sunroof on your car. My Mini-Cooper now has puddles in it.
The Basement
Make sure that your landscape grading is sloping away from the home. This insures run off is not getting trapped against your foundation.
Test your sump pump on occasion to make sure it will do its job when called up on.
A simple but true test to see how your basement is holding up, feel wall for dampness. Drywall you might be able to see, but concrete you might have to touch.
The Attic
Make sure insulation is dry
Check for any musty smells or moisture in joints or ceiling
Daylight showing through the roof is dead give away that something is wrong
Gutters and Downspouts
Make sure to clean out debris, leaves, twigs so that water won’t back up
This winter we had ice freeze and block the gutter, so you should even check in the winter time
Insure that all downspouts are far enough from foundation that water runs off
The Roof
Check roof on occasion, especially after powerful windstorms and in the spring after the winter
Don’t let snow build up. Just imagine what snow can do over time just sitting on your roof
Replace worn or missing shingles
Those with a flat roof, make sure there is a grade on your roof so that rain runs off. Rubber is the best for a flat roof
